G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #71

“Bail out”

Writer: Larry Hama
Breakdowns: Ron Wagner
Finishes: Randy Emberlin

Summary:

Wild Bill’s team and the Dreadnoks work together with a busload of Sierra Gordan refugess to escape the country. Backed by Destro, El Jefe takes over Sierra Gordo, while Chip Goodfellow tries to escape in his own seaplane, with a load of money. The Joes, Dreadnoks and refugees board Goodfellow’s plane and fly away. Goodfellow tries to hold everyone hostage, but a beserk Thrasher knocks him out of the plane, in mid-air.

Notes:

  • The story ends with the Joes and Dreadnoks flying away. I don’t believe they ever tie up how they part ways. More specifically, I don’t believe anybody gets captured by the other side.
  • Not a very good story. It’s just one big goofy chase with some ridiculous Dreadnok shenanigans thrown in. Example: Zarana jabs Thrasher in his broken arm to make him go berserk and take over a bus.
  • A similar story, saddling the Joes with refugees, had just taken place in “Special Mission”, so this is somewhat repetitive.
  • El Jefe concludes that Chip Goofellow was the source of “much corruption in my country”. But I think the new power soon goes to El Jefe’s head.
