G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #70
“Fair Trade”
Writer: Larry Hama
Penciler: Ron Wagner
Summary
The C-130 carrying the Joes, Dreadnoks and Sierra Gordo refugees crash lands in the jungle. Everyone manages to survive, though.
Hawk’s team and the Counter-Revolutionaries run into Gen. Villavaca’s troops in the jungle. Villavaca has dispatched Destro (in his helicopter) to run them down. Destro arrives and, instead of opposing the Counter-Revolutionaries, makes a deal with their leader, El Jefe. As long as El Jefe will back the NABM when he takes over the country. They agree, and Villavaca’s reign is suddenly on life support.
Notes:
- Hawk seems okay with El Jefe agreeing to Destro’s demands.
- Once again, all the front-line fighting has been negated by a bureaucratic deal.
- The main NABM official is named this month: Chip Goodfellow
- El Jefe looks A LOT like Steven Spielberg in a ball cap. No intended connection from Hama or Wagner, I’m sure…that’s just what he looks like to me. He may have appeared, un-named as a background figure, last issue…but he’s given a name this issue. He returns in a year or so, so I’m marking this as his official firstie.
- Next issue deals with Wild Bill’s team excursion from Sierra Gordo. We’re never shown how Hawk’s team makes it out. You can fill in the blanks and assume El Jefe gives them a safe passage out of the country.
- Winthrop’s briefcase of condemning evidence against the NABM– while a big plot point last issue– is hardly covered this issue. Unless I missed something, it looks like the briefcase and Winthrop both make it back home.
