G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #104

“Hero of the People”

Writer: Larry Hama
Pencilers: M.D. Bright

Summary:

Snake-Eyes is dropped into Borovia, which is currently under revolution. Locked in as a mindless killing machine, he accidentally inspires the Upper Borovian sect, by taking out the Lower Borovian security police. Among the inspired are the White Clown and Orlovsky, who recognize Snake-Eyes. A charismatic Upper Borovian named Metz uses all this to his advantage.

Back home, the Jugglers capture Stalker and Storm Shadow. The name “George Strawhacker” turned up some embarrassing flags in the US military. They need to wipe away all evidence of Strawhacker and the current mission. So someone in the military hired a freelance hit-man to travel to Borovia and eliminate Snake-Eyes and Strawhacker. A hitman named…Major Bludd.

In Sierra Gordo, the Joes, Guard and Tucaros continue on their trek. Anibal expects to be home, but is shocked to see the entire rainforest bare– chopped down and stripped to the ground.

Notes:

  • Scarlett knows that Sioban just wanted the family house. She politely offers it to her, anyways.
  • I’m not 100% sure, but I think this is the last we see of Sioban O’Hara, as she runs out of the hospital, humbled and crying. She was even left out of the Devil’s Due “Scarlett: Declassified” special.
  • Upper Borovians vs. Lower Borovians. Hmm…just kinda’ similar to the Upper Daklonians and the Lower Darklonians.
  • Once again, the new leader of the revolution (Metz) is just as corrupt and immoral as the guys he’s striving to replace. Identical to El Jefe’s waffling, circa issue 79.
  • White Clown and Orlovsky are still searching for Magda the Bareback Rider. Orlovsky finds a document at the police HQ, revealing her location.
  • Cover date is September 1990…and once AGAIN, the letters column teases a live-action GI Joe movie. This time, the ball’s in the court of Warner Bros.
  • There was a strong rumor and assumption around this time that GI Joe was going to be canceled. Most people (myself included) thought the axe would’ve fallen with issue 100. It may very well have been on the way to cancellation at this time….but something happens in the real world and in the comics that keeps it running for four more years.
