G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #309

Writer: Larry Hama
Pencils: Paul Pelletier

Summary

In Springfield, Cobra Commander, almost single-handedly, turns back a soiree of Enhanced Mutant Cyborg Cobra Troopers. His HEAT Viper brigade is wiped out by the EMCCTs, but Cobra Commander grabs the loose HEAT missiles and throws them back!

Elsewhere in Springfield, the Dreadnoks and GI Joe Ninja Team also fight the EMCCTs with success. Dawn Moreno comes upon one of the officers who shot her parents, as he is trapped inside his squad car. Dawn contemplates killing him, rescuing him, or letting the advancing fire take him. Storm Shadow notes her anger and lust for revenge and states “that is a road you don’t want to go down.”

On Cobra Island, the GI Joe recon team continues their successful escape attempt, bringing bags of hard copy intel, Dr. Mindbender– AND the frozen Serpentor corpse– with them.

Back in Springfield, the REAL Cobra Commander is watching the conflict, safely in a command center. A Crimson Guardsman was given the “Fred VII” Battle Armor. The defending Cobra troops are inspired by their “Commander’s” exploits and force all the EMCCTs to the high school ball fields; which is all part of their plan.

Notes

  • For the first time in awhile, I actually enjoyed this issue! Over-the-top comic book silliness and non-stop action.
  • Added bonus: the letters column is actually filled with letters/emails about THIS title. For the past 6 or 7 issues, it’s been filled with mostly questions and plugs for Skybound’s Energon universe. Well… there is one fan who thinks he’s hilarious with multiple Simpsons/Springfield references. And there is still yet another question about Transformers popping up. Meh. I’ll take the small improvement.
  • Speaking of Springfield, a Tele-Viper updates Serpentor Khan on the flights to “Springfield, Ohio.” Errrr.. the old joke (and plot element) was Springfield was left geographically ambiguous, since “there’s a Springfield in just about every state!”
  • As some EMCCTs attack the Ninja Team, they holler “SERPENTOR!” To which Storm Shadow replies that it’s always nice when they identify which side they’re on.
  • Road Pig is in his “Donald” persona, as he attack a mutant and uses his big cinderblock hammer thingie for a “judicious removal of its most loathsome appendage” (its head). I get the sense that Hama likes writing Road Pig and his vocabulary.
  • The “Siegie in the battle armor” seems interesting; a “Cobra Commander” who inspires his troops from the front line. However, it could just be another Siegie, like Al Kawbra was… and we may never hear nor see him/her again (or maybe it’s the same Siegie who was Al Kawbra). It’s still a rather odd development to include this, at all.
  • When seen in his control center, the real Cobra Commander is in his usual (and odd) look of glasses, a ponytail and a long mustache.
